There are different strategies to explore the Story found in scripture. You will find a few here. For more about Annetta’s heart for “Living in the Story”, click here.
Comparisons and Context
One of the stories in The Rabbi’s Touch is about the healing of a leper. I called it “The Cleansing”. Above is a note-taking sheet I created and filled in to better understand the story of this leper’s healing. The story, as recorded in the Bible is found in three of the four gospels. When the gospel versions are set up next to each other they can be compared for similarities and differences. Any patterns or repetition are highlighted and connected. It is a place to note the context (what comes just before the story) and where observations and questions can be written. You will see some of those observations and questions above. You will also notice that this story holds striking similarities between the three gospels. Both the leper’s request and Jesus’ response have been underlined twice to highlight their similarities. This is a valuable insight into this healing. One of the earliest “rules” I learned while studying the Bible is to pay attention when there is repetition! It is repeated for a reason! There are also a few differences between these tellings. One example is how the leper came before Jesus. The differing language allows for a depth of understanding of the manner of the leper’s approach.
Greek Definitions
Searching for Greek definitions of keywords in a passage is a very helpful (and exciting) exercise. Certain study tools are needed. You can find them in hard copy and have them on your shelf. It is also very easy to find online tools available for free. One such source is Biblehub.com, which can be uploaded as an app and includes a comprehensive list of resources such as commentaries, a variety of dictionaries, and both Greek and Hebrew concordances. This step of searching out Greek (or Hebrew) definitions I approach very carefully, with both prayer and a sense of anticipation. I am NOT a Greek scholar but have been encouraged to search out meaning for myself as a way to enrich my understanding. I have found surprises and gems that remind me that only God can be the Author of the texts of scripture.
Above are my notes from Matthew’s version of the leper’s healing. Notice that most of the notes are focused on the verbs, the action in the story. There are some repeated words, which are highlighted and connected. One particular word I even marked with a few stars. A gem!
I encourage you to try some study for yourself. Below are a few samples to try. Both of these passages I have written out in my own journal with my own notes. Try one or both! Discover what the Lord wants to show you and feel free to send me a note about your discoveries. I’d love to hear it!
